I am married to David and we have 3 sons – Dan, Sam and Ben – who have grown up way too fast, the eldest two are at university. Buttons, our lovely Springer Spaniel, is another boy, so I am completely outnumbered at home! In my free time I enjoy gardening, reading, running, swimming and socialising with my family and friends, not very rock and roll!

My Podiatry career started 30 years ago. Initially I worked for the NHS in the community before becoming hospital based and taking on a managerial role. After I had my family I moved into full time private practice. I have always loved my work and find it incredibly rewarding; to be able to provide instant relief in many cases is hugely satisfying.  There’s not much I haven’t seen footwise and I continue to relish the challenge of not knowing what’s coming through the door. I regard myself as a good all rounder with special interest in verrucae and in-growing toe nails, however I genuinely love all aspects of podiatry and continually strive to update my skills. My work with vulnerable communities in the NHS increased my empathy with nervous patients who can be assured of a calm gentle experience with us.

We opened Bookham Podiatry Clinic in 2004 and it has been a privilege to work among the local community, making professional relationships and friendships along the way.

I particularly enjoy going on long walks with my dog, Bailey, in my spare time. Other interests include baking, eating out at recommended restaurants and going to concerts and the theatre.  I am married to Matthew and we have one daughter, Katie who is a student at Bournemouth University.

I have been a receptionist at Bookham Podiatry for 14 years and enjoy all aspects of the job, especially the interaction with our lovely patients.  The practice has evolved enormously over the years and with the introduction of our new computer software a few years ago it has meant the everyday tasks we perform have become more efficient.   With regular updating, we continue to learn and improve and this is something I find very rewarding.

I grew up in Esher and attended Hinchley Wood School and Brooklands Technical College Weybridge where I gained my Private Secretary’s Certificate with Shorthand. I then worked in several senior secretarial roles within large national companies, until starting my family in the ‘90s. After starting married life in Walton-on-Thames we then settled in Bookham in 2004. Both my daughter and son attended The Howard of Effingham School. While they were very small I volunteered as a Home Checker for the RSPCA in Chobham. Once they were school age I returned to working part-time as secretary to an architect in Dorking for 8 years before joining Bookham Podiatry Clinic as one of their Reception Team in 2016.  I love working within the community in which I live and thoroughly enjoy meeting all our lovely patients, some of whom I recognise from my local dog walks around Polesden Lacey.  When I am not working, as well as walking my dogs, I enjoy reading, attending concerts, cinema and theatre, gardening and generally eating and socialising with friends and family.

I qualified from the University of Westminster in 1992 and went to work in the NHS. During my 20 years there I was lucky enough to work with a great team of people in a variety of clinics.  They included community clinics, patient’s homes, nursing/ residential homes, hospital wards and specialist clinics in clients with mental health and learning disabilities, the diabetic foot and nail surgery.  I completed my post graduate training in the diabetic foot in 2005.  It was an invaluable experience. In 2012 I moved into private practice and continue to enjoy working in general podiatry, retaining an interest in the diabetic foot and nail surgery.  For me, Bookham Podiatry Clinic is a local, friendly and professional practice with great patients.

I moved into the area after qualifying and continue to enjoy life in Surrey with my family and friends.

I lead a fairly quiet life when not working, enjoying pottering in the garden, travelling with my husband, (as my regular clients know), and catching up with family and friends. 

It was whilst working on a cruise ship as a Chiropodist travelling the world many years ago that I met my future husband that brought me to the South East and my life as it is now. I (we) have a son whose age makes me feel mine! 

Over the years I have worked in the NHS heading a department, attained a degree in Podiatric Medicine and have represented my profession as a Member of Council for our Professional Body.

For the latter part of my career I have worked in private practices with colleagues as well as having developed my own visiting practice where I live. I have been at Bookham for 13 years now.

I enjoy my work and find it fulfilling, particularly helping to relieve pain and worry, re-assuring individuals that they don’t have the worst feet on the planet and generally trying to make them feel better.

Paula Burgess
Podiatrist

I live in Brockham with my husband Jonathan and my two lovely daughters. I love to spend my leisure time with my family and friends, walking in the countryside, dancing and going to the gym.  I have a special interest in Energy and Reiki Healing.

I have a broad background in that I have been Podiatrist, a Teacher and a Head of a school, all of which have been hugely rewarding. I qualified as a Podiatrist 30 years ago and spent my formative years working in the NHS within two Health Authorities. I find my work as a Podiatrist enormously fulfilling, helping to make patients comfortable and cared for. I feel privileged to be working in the Bookham clinic, alongside highly skilled and like-minded professionals.

Barbara Aitken

I worked in the business finance sector for 30 years and in 2003 I changed career, became a mature 

student and gained my Podiatry degree in 2007 and I haven’t looked back. It is a very rewarding profession, which I love. I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of my work, from engaging with patients to most importantly, enabling people to stay mobile and comfortable enhancing their quality of life, or as patients say, ‘I feel like I’m walking on air’. I have a special interest in foot mobilisation therapies and I also have my own podiatry practice near my home.  I enjoy learning new skills and knowledge to stay up to date with my own clinical professional development. 

I have lived in Chobham with my partner Steven for over 20 years and in between times we lived in Prague for 5 years. We have a beautiful Bearded Collie, Fletcher and we love our walks together. My other interests are; skiing, travelling, gardening, theatre, reading, socialising with friends and family.
